Market Expansion Report: Groundies

Prepared by Convexive | October 11, 2026

The finding in one line: More than half of Groundies' review texts praise how the shoes look. The headline of its home page is about health, and design is the last of its five principles.

Based on 3,928 public reviews, 54 pages of the store's sites, 14 archive copies of its home page and Google's search data. How we did it is at the end.

Groundies is a barefoot shoe company based in Freiburg, Germany. It sells online in Europe and has an online store for the United States.

Its reviewers praise the look. Looks are praised in 1,429 of the 2,620 labeled review texts. One reviewer writes: "Healthy feet lifestyle made stylish!" (2026)

The home page headline speaks of health. On October 9, 2026, the headline of the German home page read: "Die Kunst geerdet zu sein startet mit deiner Gesundheit." In English: the art of being grounded starts with your health.

Under that headline the page lists five principles. Four are about the foot and the sole. The fifth is "Design & Qualität", design and quality.

Few review texts name health. A health reason is named in 121 of the 2,620.

A review text is one text on one day. The feed often lists the same text twice, and we count it once. A text praises the looks when the reviewer praises the look, the design or the colors, or says the shoe does not look like a barefoot shoe. A health reason is a pain, a foot condition, orthotics, a referral, age, foot strength or natural movement. A low rating means three stars or fewer. The label Our read marks our own interpretation. The store's pages and the search data were read on October 9, 2026.

What Groundies says, and what we found

What the store's pages say What we found
Home page headline, October 9, 2026: "Die Kunst geerdet zu sein startet mit deiner Gesundheit." In English: the art of being grounded starts with your health. A health reason is named in 121 of the 2,620 labeled review texts. Looks are praised in 1,429.
The same page lists five principles under the heading "Die 5 TrueSense® Prinzipien". The fifth is "Design & Qualität". Comfort is praised in 1,494 texts and looks in 1,429. No other praise is in more than 525.
Home page teaser, the same day: "Im Profisport erprobt, für dein Training optimiert." In English: tested in pro sport, optimized for your training. Sport or the gym is a stated use in 39 texts.
Home page banner, the same day: "Entdecke Hiking Styles, anatomisch konstruiert im Schwarzwald." In English: discover hiking styles, anatomically engineered in the Black Forest. Hiking or the outdoors is a stated use in 84 texts. Cold or wet weather is a stated use in 245.
The page's search description said "stylische Barfußschuhe" in all ten German archive copies we read from June 2021 to November 2025. The three copies from 2026 (February 16, April 1 and June 18) have no description. In 163 texts the reviewer praises the shoe for not looking like a barefoot shoe.
The store sells three fits by foot width. On October 9, 2026, its women's collection page counted 67 models in the Barefoot fit, 5 in Barefoot Light and 9 in Barefoot+, the wide fit. A complaint about the toe box is in 215 texts, and 132 of those use a word for narrow. Barefoot+ is named in 50 texts, and 22 of those ask for more of it.
The store runs a free loyalty program, "The Grounded Society" (read October 9, 2026). 625 texts state an earlier pair. In 25 of them the reviewer states five pairs or more.

Market 01: The look

Status (our read): praised in more than half of the review texts.

Review signal. Looks are praised in 1,429 of the 2,620 labeled texts. Only comfort is praised in more, in 1,494. Health, hiking and sport are each named in far fewer texts.

Count of review texts, of 2,620 labeled. Comfort and looks: the reviewer praises them. Health: a pain, a foot condition, orthotics, a referral, age, foot strength or natural movement. Hiking and sport: a stated use. A text can be in more than one row.

In 163 texts the reviewer says the shoe does not look like a barefoot shoe, or looks like a normal one. The office, a job or a dress occasion is a stated use in 111.

What the home page said, copy by copy. These are archive copies. Each shows one day.

  • November 1, 2020. Looks and health stood side by side. One block held the words "Edles Design" and the line "gesund wie barfuss. geschützt wie in einem Schuh."
  • November 2022 and May 2023. Health words led the banner. In May 2023 it read "Sei gesund & glücklich."
  • June 2021 to November 2025, ten copies. The page's search description called the shoes "stylische Barfußschuhe", stylish barefoot shoes. A search description is the text a search engine can show under the page title. The word was not in the visible text of any copy we read.
  • By February 16, 2026. The copies carry no search description. On April 1, 2026, one banner read "Maximale Kontrolle, mehr Stabilität, mehr Kraft." In English: maximum control, more stability, more strength.

One line in that April copy spoke of the office: "Ein neuer Ansatz für Office-Styles." In English: a new approach for office styles.

Style words are still on the site. Style or design is named on 22 of the 52 German pages we read on October 9, 2026. On the home page that day, the words "Shop the look" and "Lifestyle" stood next to the health headline.

Our read. The look is praised in more than half of the review texts, and the home page headline speaks of health. The page can say both.

Who they are (sketches drawn from the reviews, not counts)

  • The office wearer. Wants a wide toe box under a desk and a normal shoe above it.
  • The long-time barefoot wearer. Has owned other barefoot shoes and did not like how they looked at work.
  • The one who dresses up. Wears them with a dress, a skirt or dress trousers.

Ad angles in the reviewers' own words

Angle 1: It does not look like a barefoot shoe.

"Schöner bequemer Schuh der überhaupt nicht nach 'Gesundheitsschuh' aussieht." (2021)

In English: a nice, comfortable shoe that does not look like a health shoe at all.

"I love that I can wear shoes that are healthy for my feet, don’t squish my toes, and still look great." (2026)

A line about health is a health claim. In an ad it must follow the rules for such claims in each country.

Angle 2: Barefoot at the office.

"Ein sehr schöner Schuh, der nicht nach Barfußschuh aussieht und man ihn deshalb auch gut im Büro tragen kann" (2025)

In English: a very nice shoe that does not look like a barefoot shoe, so it can be worn at the office too.

"they are the only decent minimalist female shoe for the office clothes and skirts that I could find" (2020)

Positioning shift (our read): from the health headline alone, to the look and the foot side by side.

Market 02: The foot that is hard to fit

Status (our read): named on the pages, with few wide-fit models on the women's page.

Review signal. In 254 texts the reviewer states a foot that is hard to fit. Wide feet are stated in 115 texts and narrow feet in 80. A named foot condition is in 66.

What the pages say. The store sells three fits. Its guide says of the wide one: "Barefoot+ Fit: Mit anatomischer Zehenbox. Ideal für breite Füße." In English: with an anatomical toe box, ideal for wide feet. On October 9, 2026, the women's collection page counted 9 Barefoot+ models among the 81 with a fit label.

What reviewers ask for. Barefoot+ is named in 50 texts, all from 2023 on. In 22 of them the reviewer asks for more models, sizes or colors in that fit.

"I wish barefoot plus was available in more sizes" (2026)

"Gerne mehr Barefoot+ Schuhe!" (2025)

In English: more Barefoot+ shoes, please!

The complaint. The toe box is praised in 297 texts and is a complaint in 215. Of those 215, 132 use a word for narrow.

Our read. The store named the same thing in a banner that is in the archive copies of April 1 and June 18, 2026: "Schmal war gestern. Natürlich ist jetzt." In English: narrow was yesterday, natural is now. On the women's page we read, most models were still in the two narrower fits.

One reviewer with wide feet writes:

"ich habe eher breite Füße und andere Stiefel, die ich trage (auch von anderen Marken) sehen oft eher breit und klobig aus und diese Stiefel sehen super schlank und toll aus!!!" (2026)

In English: I have rather wide feet, and other boots I wear, from other brands too, often look rather wide and clunky, and these boots look really slim and great.

Positioning shift (our read): from three fits explained in a guide, to the width as the first choice a visitor makes.

Market 03: The cold and wet months

Status (our read): the use that reviewers name most, and named on the home page.

Review signal. Cold or wet weather is the stated use in 245 texts, more than any other use. Everyday wear is next, in 140. In 111 of the 245 the reviewer praises how the shoe copes with water or cold. In 47 it is a complaint.

What the pages say. On October 9, 2026, the home page showed the autumn and winter collection. One product page reads: "Die wasserdichte High-Cut-Konstruktion". In English: the waterproof high-cut build.

"Super Schuh für nasses Herbstwetter." (2025)

In English: a great shoe for wet autumn weather.

A company review with three stars says: "Leider waren alle als wasserfest beworbenen Schuhe höchstens wasserabweisend." (2026) In English: sadly, all the shoes advertised as waterproof were water-repellent at most. That is one review, and it names no model.

Our read. Reviewers name this use more than any other, and the home page named the season on the day we read it.

Market 04: The owner of an earlier pair

Status (our read): one text in four states an earlier pair, and first-pair statements are now rare.

Review signal. In 625 of the 2,620 labeled texts the reviewer states an earlier pair. In 25 of those the reviewer states five pairs or more. The highest number stated is 15.

What they praise. Looks, in 342 of the 625.

What they complain about. Fit, in 203 of the 625. In 67 the reviewer wants more models, sizes or colors, or misses a model that is gone.

"very trendy, look like "normal" shoes, but they have been discontinued!" (2026)

"She found out this style was going to be discontinued so she wanted two pair." (2026)

First-pair statements. Product review texts that state a first pair or a first order fell from 24 in 2020 to 3 in 2025. The texts in those two years numbered 322 and 355.

Our read. About one labeled text in four states an earlier pair. Some of these reviewers say so when a model goes.

Fit and the low ratings

A fit complaint comes with more than half of the low ratings.

Of the 2,620 labeled texts, 361 carry three stars or fewer. A complaint about size, the toe box or another part of the fit is in 208 of those. The same kind of complaint is in 453 of the 2,259 texts with four or five stars. This is a link in the same review. It is not a proven cause.

"I had to send these back due to the surprisingly narrow toe box for what claims to be barefoot fit." (2025)

The store asks its own size question in the review form. It has 141 answers so far, and 109 of them are the middle answer, "True to Size". The question has been asked only since December 2025.

The United States

Groundies has an online store for the United States. We read it on October 9, 2026.

The store. Google's ad archive reported 300 US ads for the store's domain and returned 100 of them. The earliest date among those 100 is May 1, 2025. The Internet Archive first holds the address groundies.com/us from July 2025, and the address us.groundies.com from January 2026. On October 9, 2026, the US store listed 18 products. The main store's sitemap listed 149.

The page. On October 9, 2026, the first banner of the US home page spoke of "clean designs". The second read: "Your body wasn’t built for all this cushioning. Take back control."

The search. In the United States, average weekly interest in each of the five barefoot shoe phrases we pulled was higher in 2026 than in 2022 (Google Trends). Both years are counted to the week of October 4. All five phrases peaked in April 2026. Google Trends shows interest in a phrase. It does not show who searched or why.

Google Trends, United States, average weekly index from January 1 to the week of October 4, 2026, five phrases on one scale, pulled October 9, 2026. The same weeks of 2022 stood at 2.5, 6.8, 6.7, 1.3 and 0.8, in the order shown. All five peaked in April 2026. Interest in a phrase, not volume, and not who searched.

The reviews. A country is on the review only in 2026. Of the 501 texts of the last 12 months that carry a country, 198 come from the United States and 111 from Germany. Reviews arrive in batches by country, so this shows who was asked for a review. It is not a split of sales.

One reviewer in August 2026, with five stars, writes: "I'd order a second pair if their USA store was actually open online so I could do so." That is one review.

Our read. The US page opens with designs. The German page opens with an offer and puts health in its headline.

Five moves, no new products

Each move is a test. Four of the five name a number the store already holds.

Move 1: Test the look next to the health headline. Run one home page version that names the look, in the reviewers' words from Market 01. Measure orders against the current page.

Move 2: Give the office wearer a page. On October 9, 2026, the store's collection for the working day held 17 products and no text of its own. Test a page built on the office and dress reviews. Measure visits and orders from it.

Move 3: Make the width the first choice. Let a visitor pick a fit before a model, and offer a notice when a model arrives in Barefoot+. Measure how many ask for that notice.

Move 4: Tell owners before a model goes. Test a last-call message to people who own that model. Measure orders from it.

Move 5: Print the fit answers on the product page. The store already collects them. Test showing them by model. Measure fit complaints and returns on those models.

What to watch

  1. Do looks stay in more than half of the product review texts? In the last 12 months it is 211 of 402. Count the 12 months to October 2027. Under half, the finding no longer holds for new reviews.
  2. Do first-pair statements come back? Here they are in 3 of the 355 product texts from 2025. At 5% or more of a year's product texts, they are back at the level of 2022.
  3. Does a fit complaint still come with about half of the low ratings? In the last 12 months it is 33 of the 65 low-rating product texts. Under one third in the 12 months to October 2027, the link has weakened.
  4. Does US interest in the phrases hold? Here "barefoot sneakers" averages 28.2 in 2026, to the week of October 4. Under half of that in the same weeks of 2027, the rise did not hold.
  5. How many products does the US store list? Here it is 18 on October 9, 2026. Fewer than 18 a year later, the US range has shrunk.

Next step

We can run this study on your own store: your reviews, your pages, your ads and your market. To start, book a conversation with Convexive.

How we did this

The reviews. On October 9, 2026, we collected every review that the store's review system showed in public: 3,659 product reviews and 269 company reviews, written from June 2019 to that day. The feed often lists the same text twice. We counted 2,622 different texts.

The labels. A language model read every text and recorded what the reviewer states: the use, the body, the praise and the complaints. The rule was to tag only what the reviewer states. It labeled 2,620 of the 2,622 texts, and every count in this report is of those 2,620. A language model did the reading, not a person.

The languages. Of the 2,620 texts, 1,594 are German, 794 English and 118 French. Review quotes are printed as written. The English lines under them are our translations.

The checks. Every quote in this report was checked by script against the saved review or page. An AI reader read 24 of the texts labeled as praise of looks, and all 24 were right. This code list was not tested against reference labels.

The store's pages. We read 54 pages on October 9, 2026: 38 on the main store, 15 in the help center and the US home page. One more US page was read the same day. The pages were read from Canada, and the main store showed its German view. The count of 52 German pages leaves out the English home page and the US home page.

The archive. We read 14 copies of the German home page in the Internet Archive, dated November 2020 to June 2026. A copy shows one day. The page can change between two copies. We did not open four more copies dated between November 14, 2025 and February 16, 2026.

The search data. Google Trends, pulled on October 9, 2026, for the United States, from October 2021. Yearly figures compare the weeks from January 1 to the week of October 4 of each year. The last week was not over on the day of the pull.

The ads. Google's Ads Transparency Center, pulled on October 9, 2026. It returned 100 of the 300 US ads it reported, with dates and no text.

Limitations of our approach

  1. Counts, not buyers. Review counts are not customers or sales. Only the store knows its order mix. The feed does not mark most product reviewers as verified buyers.
  2. Invited reviews. The store's review system invites buyers to review. Of the 269 company reviews, 252 came from an invitation.
  3. The early years look filtered. Of the 816 texts from 2019 to 2021, 742 carry five stars. We did not compare complaint shares across years.
  4. Company reviews are new. They start in January 2026. Service complaints cannot be compared with earlier years.
  5. No reference test. The labels were not scored against a set labeled by people. We did not test how many texts the labels for health, hiking or sport miss. A general remark such as "healthy for my feet" has no code, so health may be named in more texts than we count.
  6. One pull. Each search figure and each ad list was pulled once, on one day.
  7. Interest, not volume. Google Trends is an index of interest in a phrase. It does not count searches, and it does not say who searched.
  8. The pages are a sample. We read 54 pages and 14 archive copies. We did not read text inside images. The store may say more about looks on a page we did not read.
  9. The country field is new. It exists only on 2026 reviews, and reviews arrive in batches by country.
  10. Fit and low ratings. The link between a fit complaint and a low rating is not a proven cause.
  11. Sketches, angles and moves. The buyer sketches, the ad angles and the moves are our own writing. No ad and no move was tested.
